Font Analysis

FONT ANALYSIS

This is the analysis of the fonts that I may use in my magazine...

"The Quick Brown Fox Jumped Over The Lazy Dog"
Century Gothic: This is a very clean and simple font that is easy to read. This font would be a good choice for font of which could be used within the magazine as it is easily read appealing in a simple but desiring way.

"The Quick Brown Fox Jumped Over The Lazy Dog"

Garamond: This font is much harder to read than century Gothic as it is slightly more edged. The fact that this font is edged gives a more distinctive look and makes it look more professional, this could be a possible font within the magazine.

"The Quick Brown Fox Jumped Over The Lazy Dog"

Blackladder ITC: This font looks the most like handwriting out of the possible fonts, it is also quite condensed and bold. this would be a good font for the main title(s). This font would not be the best choice as it is very difficult to read at a smaller size.

“The Quick Brown Fox Jumped Over The Lazy Dog”

Comic Sans MS: Like Century Gothic this is a very clean and simple font that is easily read. This font is very consistent in both lower case and capitals which will allow me to use one font throughout the whole magazine which would add to the consistency of the magazine. This font is probably the best choice for my magazine.

Mock up of Double page spread

Mock up of Contents Page

mock up of front cover

explanation of how the results will effect my construction

Explanation of how the results will affect
my construction.

The results from my questionnaire have helped aid me in my previous theory as in my questionnaire I have found that RnB, Pop and Drum+Base are the most listened to style of music. This will affect my construction as RnB is the style that is listened to mostly, which means that my magazine will be either aimed at the RnB audience or the Pop audience.
The Price of my magazine will be around the same price range as most music magazines as most people would only be willing to pay up to £3 for a music magazine. this is going to aid my construction as my magazine will be priced at £2.99. this price is the most used for magazines.
I have also found out that using a better know artist on the front cover helps the producer sell the magazine, so therefor I will be using a know person for the main artist on the cover, also I have noticed that a better looking artist on the cover reaches a wider audience as they are drew in by the beauty.
The contents of the magazine also has a very big effect as a wide variety of people would like music magazines to also contain other aspects such as fashion, gossip and information on important things. Although music magazines mainly feature music, most people would buy them more often if they were to contain other aspects aswell.

How I will use the knowledge gained from research

How will i use the knowledge gained from my research
in my construction?

The knowledge I have attained from the research I have done so far will aid me in my construction as I now know the main styles for music magazine covers, contents pages and double page spreads. The main aspects covered in these pages would be images of artists that look very professional and also advertisements and small articles featuring other artists and those featured anyway.

Another thing that will aid me in my construction will be the types of music magazine that are most likely to be brought and also the styles of music that are mainly listened to. these include artists such as eminem, usher, Cheryl Cole and many other RnB/pop artists.

my main types of music i will look at is RnB, Pop and Drum + Base as these types of music are mainlylistened to and will be featured in my questionaire.

Music Magazine Double Page Spread-2

Music Magazine Double Page Spread-2

This double page spread features the solo artist Cheryl Cole, the use of the capital C in red really catches the eye of the audience and is also quite clever as it is also the initial of Cheryl's name. The colour scheme for this double page spread would be black, white and red. The uses of these colours are quite popular as they make the most effective and efficiant shceme of colours to make the most presentable magazine. The image of Cheryl that takes up a whole page really stands out against the white background making the page look neat, also Cheryl is looking towards the capital C creating a mystery for the audience as they want to know where and what the subject is looking at. This DPS uses two main images of cheryl one is of her at either a concert/party. As she is dressed in quite wierd outfits in both images contrast with the anchorage text "i don't know what i look like anymore. Do you know what i mean". This makes the audience want to help cheryl as from this one part of text the audience feels missery and remorse for her. The images attract the audiences eye as in both images the subject is wearing unusual clothing, this relates to another artist (lady GaGa) as what cheryl is wearing is something the other artist would wear. The text on this DPS is set out in the typical setting of collums this makes it easier to read. the audience for this magazine would most probably be pop music fans and people that look at Cheryl Cole as a role model.

music magazine double page spread-1

Music Magazine Double Page Spread-1

This double page spread mainly features the artist Florence Welsh, from "Florence and The Machines". The large image of Florence is very attractive to the audience as it stands out against the white background, it also takes up a whole page making the double age spread simple but effective. The use of 3/4 colours is very effective as the red in the subjects hair contrasts with the red on the USA flag, as she is wearing black the red really stands out and catches the eye of the audience. Florence is also looking directly at the audience creating direct address. the use of direct address makes the audience feel like they can relate to the subjects as its only good manner to look at someone when they talk to you.
The colour scheme is mostly made up of black, white and grey. This creates a subtle mood as there is not much use of bright/vibrant colours, also this helps with the genre of which the magazine is.
The text on this double page spread is typically set out in collums as this makes it easier for the audience to read the text. Two words in the caption are in a blue colour to symbolise importance, these two words are FLORENCE WELCH. This suggests that the subjects name is quite important or maybe even just to show that shes different to other artists.
This double page spread uses a sort of symetrical layout as it uses both black on white for the text and image. This gives it a appropriate and neat layout. The shape in which the colums are presented are almoast a square ouytlining of the position florence is sitting on the flag.
The 'Got the love' really stands out as it is in a big, black, handwriting font. This also stands out as it is the title of one of Florence's songs. the USA just behind the song title matches together to bing the message of USA's got the love this suggests that the magazine is american and would appeal to a more american audience.

Contents page 2 - research

Music Magazine Contents Page 2

This contents page really catches the audiences eye as its main colour scheme is black and white, the part that stands out the most would be the coloured smoke/flame. this stands out as it centres the contents and creates a border around the page. The images featured on this contents page are numbered to show which page number these images are on. also the small story's are underneath subheadings creating a more professional and clean house style. this contents page is very simple and easy to read which makes the audience feel more at home and able.
The use of different size images on this contents page helps it look more desired. The image labelled 40 i8s at a direct angle creating direct address making the audience more relate able and able to feel what the image is trying to propose.

Music Magazine Contents Page - 1

Music Magazine Contents Page 1 - Research

This contents page really catches the audiences attention with the image of the blond woman next to a bus as it sticks out against the dark grey background, also as the image is slanted it makes it more relateable and entices the audience due to most people just stick images down slanted to make them look more creative. The image is anchored on by the images of the metal corner holders as they overlap, it is also anchored on by the bold, smokey white font as it illustrates the image explaining exactly what you can see.
The colour scheme for this contents page is quite plain as it uses mostly black and white. There are also small splashes of bold red and yellow within this contents page to break up the black and white and to highlight more eye catching parts of the magazine.
The information for this music magazine is split up by subheadings, these are in white font with a black background wich makes them stand out. This is easier for the audience/reader as it helps them locate a specific part of the magazine if intended.  typically, the contents page icludes alot of information on each article, briefly describing what the topic is and what number page to find it on.this is very efficient. The page numbers are also in a red font this helps it stand out and also it makes the page numbers look important as the colour red symbolises importance/danger.
The use of a subcription advertisement at the bottom of the page is a clear and simple way to make people subsribe as the contrasting colour of yellow really helps emphisise this aspect.
The colour scheme for this magazine contents page is red, white and black. this clearly shows that even though simple colours have been used, simple colours can stand out and make an amazing magazine.
The overall layout for this contents page would be quite formal and crisp as it is devided up into sections that are easily accesible. it also suites the genre of the magazine as its spacious, clean and crisp.

Music Magazine Cover 3

Music Magazine Cover Research - 3

The masthead for this magazine is Rolling stones. It is partly covered by a logo of some sort which indicates that the magazine is well known and confident that its audience will know that it is this magazine. The font for this masthead is yellow with a white 3D outline, it is also Bold. The masthead goes across the full width of the page but is not obscured by the main image, as the main image is behind the text. In other Rolling stone magazines the masthead is sometimes covered by the main image which suggests that this cover has a more urban theme to it. It may appeal to the audience as the masthead is bold/3D and in yellow.
The main image for this music magazine cover is of Lil Wayne. There is not direct address between the subject and the audience on this cover as he is either looking down or has his eyes closed. This suggests that the subject is undergoing a sad moment. Lil Wayne's tear drop tattoos really add emphasis and emotion to this point. He is represented as a troubled and down which may make the audience want to investigate. This will appeal to the audience as most people really want to know everything about certain music artists. Normally rappers are represented in a more aggressive way.
The sell lines for this magazine, feature things such as music genres changing and other musical artists. The sell line "LIL WAYNE GOES ROCK" this suggests that Lil Wayne has had an exciting development in his career and has had enough of doing rap music and has decided he wanted a change to another large music genre. The font for this sell line is larger than the other sell lines as it is the most important/ the main article.
The overall colour scheme for this magazine is yellow, white and black. these three colours blend together to make a quite formal/urban. The colour of the main image blends with the colour of the font as it stands out and creates a 3D look to the magazine. The bar code for this magazine is quite small and out the way, there is nothing covered by the bar code or price.
The overall layout for this music magazine cover is quite minimal as there are only a few sell lines. This cover sticks to the conventions of a music magazine with the one main image and a few selllines. there is also a low colour count as the cover only has 2/3 colours. The layout suits the genre of the magazine as it has an urban sense and includes quite dull shades of colours wich looks urban.

Music Magazine cover 2

Music Magazine Cover 2 - Research

The masthead for this magazine is is NME. The font of the masthead is a Bold, white font which really stands out against Florence's red hair. It matches the genre/colour scheme of the magazine as the magazine uses three main colours; Red, White and a grey/blue. These colours really stand out and bring attention to the magazine. This masthead does not go across the width of the cover as it takes up a permanent residence within the top left corner, this seems to be the usuall place for the NME logo/masthead. It may appeal to the audience as it is plain but bold and stands out .
The main image is a close up shot of Florence from 'Florence and the Machines'. She is looking directly at the camera which gives of direct adress to the audience, this draws the audience in as they feel that florence is speaking directly to them from within the magazine. On this music magazine cover florence seems to be represented as a powerful and beutiful woman, maybe even a role model for a certain audience group.
The broke down name for this magazine is 'NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS'. This name suggests that it is the newest musical express magazine. It makes the audience want to buy this magazine as it is short simple and states to be new.
The skyline for this magazine would be the 'introducing the new NME' the colour and font match the scheme but is not as noticeable as the rest of the magazine but still stands out against florences red hair.
The anchorage text for this magazine would be the x-factor statement across florences chest, this draws the audience in as it says "i would have never got through the x-factor auditions" this suggests that florence was self concious about her voice or that she wasnt confident enough to have been judged. it makes the audience want to buy the magazine as the want to know more about this quote and find out how she feels about the whole situation.
The overall layout of this magazine cover is quite formal with the sell lines at either side of the cover, it could also be saw as a quite minimal overall layout as it only has a couple of sell lines with 2/3 basic colours.

Music magazine cover 1

Music magazine cover 1 - Research

This magazines front cover maintains a solid colour scheme using red, white and black. These three colours really make the magazine stand out as red/black symbolise warning and importance they also give the magazine an urban sense which really helps the rap industry. Against the white background the red and black writing stand out and catches the attention of the audience. This creates a presentable and effective cover which entice the audience. The main image is one of the artist Eminem it is quite large, covering most of the page, due to the image having a centre positioning it stands out and as the subject is looking straight forward giving the audience direct address. The stern look on the subjects face brings across a serious aspect to the magazine.
One of the main focal points for this magazine would be the 'EMINEM COMES CLEAN' this attracts the audience as most people want to know about other peoples business. The fact of that it also names some of the drugs eminem was taking shows the seriousness of his drug addiction as "Vicodin,Valium and methadone" are serious drugs. Methadone is a class A drug which also brings the criminal side of eminem out, although the magazine cover doesn't give away too much information about this it creates a sense of mystery and danger.
The skyline of this magazine is a question wondering if this is the last year of classical rap, it is in a simple bold font with black and grey colouring. It matches the genre of the magazine as it mentions famous rappers and classical rap. It almost goes across the full width of the page but there is a logo saying 'the real rap' this suggests the the rap industry is changing and becoming more fake and not as emotional with the lyrics. This skyline may appeal to an older audience as it mentions a few older rappers.
The Masthead for this cover is 'VIBE'. The colour of the font is a shadow effect staring from black at the top fading into a vigorous red, this make the magazine title to stand out and catch the eye of the audience. Although the masthead is partially covered it is still very powerful on the cover. It goes across the full width of the magazine in a bold font to show its power and simpleness.
The overall layout for this magazine cover is quite formal with the sell lines equally space out between the page. Although the sell lines are in different size fonts and different colours they are just as easy to read. i would say the layout is almost minimal as there is only one image and six sell lines. This layout definitely suits the genre of the magazine as its bold and urban.

My college magazine cover + Evaluation

My College Magazine Cover

EVALUATION
1) My media product represents particular social groups as it shows a smartly dressed student in a college like environment. It shows that the students are fun and outgoing as it talks about social parties such as college freshers.the magazine cover also shows that they are hard working, confident and academic as it also mentions exam prep and exams. The part about upcoming trips and expeditions also show that the students/college are multicultural and linguistic.
2) If this magazine was to be published and distributed all across the country ,the media institutions that I would choose would be IPC, it would then be distributed in places like supermarkets, conveinience stores and magazine booths such as hmv and tescos. The magazine would basically be available in places that young people are most likely to go such as connexions, libaries, ect.
3+4) The audience for my college magazine would most likely be students,to sell this issue to the intended target audience I have included features that I knew students would be interested in. For example I have promioted the college freshers party event on the cover. I know that students would be interested as being a student myself we are always looking for an excuse to party. To sell this issue I have made sure that my cover looks as proffesional as possible as the cover is the key to selling a magazine.
5) I have learnt that uploading a photo to photoshop is how to make it look more proffesional. To get from an amature photo to this vibrant magazine cover, I uploaded the photo to a site called photoshop, this is a site where photographers can edit their photos to make them look proffesional. I made the photo more sharp and made the colours brighter to make it stand out.

Contents page 2 - research

Contents page 2 research

The main image that catches the the audiences eye straight away is the 2 side pictures. These images are really bright and vibrant and as the use shades of blue, pink, yellow and orage make them more vibrant because these colours look florecesent. This contents page is very clear and spacious, the layout of this page is very fixed, neat and brought together tightly. The image of the the man numbered 40 links in with the sell line under the headline PEOPLE. The colour scheme of this contents page would be black and white as all of the writing is in black on a white background and the masthead/tittle is white colour on a black background whick really makes it stand out and look bold. Nearly all of the images are in square or rectangular shapes. The sellines on this contents page match up with the pictures as the pictures have a small digit in the bottom corners of the image. This magazine contents page looks like it belongs to a magazine about real aspects of life and help/tips on how to improve your life.

Contents page 1- research

College contets page research 1

There are 3 main images on this contents page, the one of the images is a student/pupil raising their hand,to say hes about to answer a question, another image looks like a group of students/ a youth group visiting some place, this image is positioned in the middle slightly above the bottom. The third image is of a small tube, the tube really catches the audiences eye as it is brightly coloured with reds, oranges and yellows. These colours really stand out as they represent the sun/warmth. Along with each main image there is a white page number within a blue circle, these link the images to the writing next to certain page numbers. The colour scheme for this contents page would be blue, yellow and green as these are the 3 colours that are most saw when the audience looks at these pages, there is also some red and black writing. The red writing really stands out as it is on a white background. The word welcome is highlighted in bright yellow which makes the audience feel welcome and want to read as they feel comfort from the word. This contents page also contains a few logos that probably sponsor the magazine and help publish the magazine.
The Font is all in the same bold, block writing, this makes it easier to read as it is clearer. The size of the masthead is a lot bigger than any of the other writing on the page which stands out and automatically catches the eye of the audience, this suggests that this is the most important thing on the page. The size of the heaadlines are smaller than the masthead but sigtly bigger than the sellines which shows that they are next in line of importance than the smaller headlines for individual sellines. Finally the sellines are the smallest  font and arnt in bold which doesnt over power the page with writing which may put the audience of.

College Magazine Cover 3

Research College Magazine Cover 3

The Masthead for this magazine is "Sporting News COLLEGE" the colour and size really make this stand out ass the yellow outline around the Bold Black font really stands out and gives the tittle purpose and meaning. The tittle "Sporting News COLLEGE is really fit fro purpose as the magazine is all about the news on sport that is revolving within the college.
The Skyline for this magazine is " ROSTERS-STATS-SCHEDULES-BOWL PICKS " this shows some attractions that draw the audience in to read the magazine. The Skyline and Strap line are virtually the same thing so in this magazine the four words across the top of the page would also be the strapline.
The Slogan for this magazine is " See a Different Game" this suggests that the magazine is full of matches and games that are different in a completely different context. This draws the audience in as the audience want to see new, exciting, never before seen action and contents.
The main image for this magazine s the images of the  American footballers (rugby players) this shows that the magazine is about sports and would attract a more sporty audience. The two different images show different angles of the players, maybe even a home uniform and away uniform.it could also represent the difference in size between the players as the player in the back looks more mighty (big and strong) but the player in the foreground looks more tactical and speedy.
There is no Price on this magazine which could indicate that it is a free magazine unless the price is labelled on the back cover.
The anchorage Text would be the "Penn Station" as the points underneath would draw the audience in as it states a short part of what is too come within the magazine. This also makes my first suggestion about the main image to be untrue as it it two dynamic rushers speeding into action, faster than locomotives.
There are only a few sell lines on this magazine one would be the :
"240 FBS & FCS PREVIEWS"
This draws the attention of the audience because the 240 is in a bigger font and is bright orange which stands out against the white background. FBS stands for Football bowl subdivision and FCS stands for Football championship subdivision. Now these are broke down i can now say that the Audience would be either college football supporters or college footballers.
The colour scheme for this magazine would be bright colours such as yellow, orange, white and red.
These colours suggest a bright and happy magazine even though it is a American college football magazine.
The layout of this magazine is well presented and has being fitted together nicely to create a simple but interesting magazine cover.

College Magazine Cover 2

   Research Magazine Cover 2

The masthead 'Ridgewater College' is plain white which is simple and stands out. This would appeal to a more older age group such as parents/carers, or it could also appeal to a more smarter college student, as the bold and simple font makes it look more sophisticated. This makes it appeal to maybe a broader audience. The main image is of a girl sat in a chair, the expression on the girls face suggests that the college is fun and exciting. The girl also looks confident and comfortable, there is also a direct adress as the woman on the cover is looking straight out into the audiences eyes to create purpose. The globe in the corner of the magazine suggests that the college is multicultural or studies geography.
The anchorage text on this cover would be "Global Learning" the words Global Learning suggests that the college has many opportunities for students to study abroad or just study other countries in detail. This shows that the college is ethnically balanced.
There are a few aspects that are not included within the magazine such as; the strapline, Skyline, bar code and a price. There is a slogan on the page but unfortunately it is to blurry to be read.
There are a few sell lines such as the "Inside!" this draws the attention of the audience as it creates a sence of mystery/engima. The Audience would also be interestd in the small corner image which is what looks like to be a man with a baby waulrus. This shows that the college also covers things such as animal safety or the prevention of animal cruelty.
The colour scheme of this magazine seems to be blue, white and a small part of green. Now this suggests a global theme of the world. the blue would symbolise the ocean, peacefull and calm. The white would suggest the ice/polar caps, still but sharp and the green would symbolise the land/greenery.
This magazine cover is quite formal in its organisation/layout. It is spaced out and easier to read which shows that this magazine is for a lower aged audience. The creater of this magazine did not use many graphic effects as there is only one added shape to the magazine.

College Magazine Cover 1

 Research College Magazine Cover 1
The main image in this magazine is an image of Mike Posner. The way in which he is standing suggests a laid back attitude. The first place you look is at his face due to his white teeth and blue eyes standing out. The image has a central position on the magazine which helps the idea of direct address, as the person featured is making direct eye contact with the viewer. Another thing that draws the attention of the viewer is his chain, this draws the attention because its plain and simple like an actual college student.
The Masthead is plain but stands out. The title (COLLEGE) shows that this is a magazine clearly for college students/parents&carers. The colour is fit for purpose as it matches the theme/mood of the magazine cover. The colour scheme for this magazine is blue, white and orange. There is only a small section of white on this magazine. The colour Blue suggests a calm/peaceful environment throughout the magazine this also suggests that the magazine is less likely to be full of violence. The orange colour really stands out against the blue which shows these parts are more important, orange is usually associated with danger/importance.
The sell lines of this magazine really draw the audience in as things such as ;
"Not exactly extra credit: I slept with my professor"
   "Career Fair Do's & Dont's"
These sell lines would attract an audience with the age range of 16+. This is because most 16 year olds are either looking for jobs or about to start college. The Line "not exactly extra credit: I slept with my professor" would attract parents/careers due to the fact of they wouldn't be wanting there children going to a college where the professors sleep with their students as it disgraces the college, student and professor. The other line "Career Fair Do's and Dont's" would also attract the audience of college students as the concept of going college is to get a job or go university afterwards.
This magazine cover does not have a Skyline, Slogan or Strapline.

Brief Intro

My name is Jerome Lakin and I'm about to start studying Media Studies at AS Level. I will be undergoing this course at Bramcote 6th Form.
During this course ill be doing a preliminary exercise, of using a DTP (Desktop Publishing) program and also a manipulation program to produce the front and contents pages of a new college magazine. The magazine will feature a photograph of a student in a medium plus some appropriately laid-out text and masthead.
My main task is to use a DTP program and a image manipulation program to produce the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine.

This is ME!
